Billing Pair of Puffins

When puffins leave their breeding areas in mid August they spend the next seven months or so at sea.

In the following spring they return to breed and meet up with their mate, usually the same mate as in the previous breeding season. They perform a bonding ritual, known as billing.  It involves a lot of feather rustling and guttural noises.   It is often observed by a group of their peers who encircle the pair in order to get a good look.

Rabbits often live in close proximity to puffins and, in fact, puffins often take over rabbit burrows for nesting.  I once witnessed a rabbit watching the ‘billing’ ritual and it seemed well impressed.
