I spent a long time sketching and watching this family. They were gorging themselves on sticklebacks in a small backwater of the River Wye in Lathkil Dale. There were two parents and three young birds repeatedly diving into the pool and coming up with another fish. My sculptures represent them in several poses from diving to resting, and flying. How they survive in the winter has always been a mystery to me.
