I remember seeing my first avocet many many years ago in 1954. Three school friends and myself cycled to Havergate Island in Suffolk, from Sheffield to see these birds, which had reestablished there after a along absence. A stunning bird to look at and irresistible to sketch, or sculpt. They represent a remarkable story as they have become well established in Britian. This particular bird was the last of three chicks that the parents hatched. The other two were predated by a crow and a coot. The parents are not equipped to defend their territory. This one was hatched on a small island in the river Humber.
