The male smew in breeding plumage is a really striking bird. With a pure white body and black markings, it is unmistakable. They are migrants to Britain but they can be seen in winter months on British wetlands. Although they have the appearance of a duck, they belong to the merganser family.
I sketched these at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge. It made my job a bit easier because the birds would regularly swim under the bridge on which I was standing. So not only did I get the norma pose, I had the opportunity to get several sketches from above which was very useful for the sculpting process.
