I was delighted when I was commissioned to sculpt the chough, because like most members of the crow family, they are great characters. However, sketching them is not easy because they are rarely still. In flight their acrobatic displays are wonderful. I finally found a subject for my sculpture in Pembrokeshire. A group of five was busy probing into old piles of cow dung that must have been rich in insects. The following evening I was sitting on the grass in the picnic area at Martin’s Haven and two choughs came very close. It was clearly a regular stopping place for them because they were picking up tit bits left by visitors. It gave me the opportunity to sketch them in good detail.
